I teach creative writing in prison and other topics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I was elected to office in Santa Cruz, including mayor. I have a son, Jason, a daughter-in-law Erika, and two grandchildren Briton and Oona. I live in Santa Cruz with my wife, Laurie Brooks, who is the director of the William James Association. We live with our dog, Samuel Beckett and our cat, Willie Mays.
